Our commitment to safeguarding

What is safeguarding?

In the UK, safeguarding means protecting peoples’ health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. In our sector, we understand it to mean protecting people, including children and adults at risk from harm that arises from coming into contact with our staff or programmes.

Safeguarding of children and adults at risk from harm and exploitation is of paramount importance. Good practice indicates that organisations should have a written policy supported by robust procedures and guidelines. Community Calling is working to enhance and support volunteering throughout the province.

Abuse is a violation of an individual’s human and civil rights; it can take many forms. The volunteers at Community Calling are committed to a practice that promotes the welfare of children and adults at risk and safeguards them from harm. Volunteers who operate as part of our extended teams across NI accept and recognise our responsibilities to develop an awareness of the issues that cause harm, and to establish and maintain a safe environment for them.

We will not tolerate any form of abuse wherever it occurs or whoever is responsible. We are committed to promoting an atmosphere of inclusion, transparency and openness and are open to feedback from the people who use our services, carers, advocates and our volunteers with a view to how we may continuously improve our services/activities. We actively encourage this by asking both the volunteers and people receiving assistance for feedback both during handover and after initial support has been provided.

We endeavour to safeguard whoever we provide support to by:

  1. Adhering to our safeguarding policy and ensuring that it is supported by robust procedures;
  2. Carefully following the procedures laid down for the recruitment and selection of volunteers;
  3. Providing effective management for volunteers through support and training (where possible);
  4. Implementing clear procedures for raising awareness of and responding to abuse within the organisation and for reporting concerns to statutory agencies that need to know, while involving children and adults at risk and their carers appropriately;
  5. Ensuring general safety and risk management procedures are adhered to;
  6. Promoting full participation and having clear procedures for dealing with concerns and complaints;
  7. Managing personal information, confidentiality and information sharing;
  8. Implementing a code of behaviour for volunteers.
